Rainbow Mountain, known in Quechua as Vinicunca, is one of the highest day hikes most visitors to Peru will ever do. The striped slopes are in the Vilcanota range, southeast of Cusco, near the Ausangate glacier. The colors draw people in, but the elevation is what decides how the day goes. This guide explains Rainbow Mountain elevation in meters and feet, what that altitude does to your body and how to prepare.

Rainbow Mountain Elevation: Quick Answer

Rainbow Mountain’s viewpoint is at about 5,100 meters (16,730 feet) above sea level. Published figures range from 5,036 m (16,522 ft) to about 5,200 m (17,060 ft), depending on the source and the point measured. The hike starts at about 4,600 m (15,090 ft), so you gain about 500 m on foot. That is roughly 1,700 m higher than Cusco and 2,670 m higher than Machu Picchu.

How High Is Rainbow Mountain in Feet and Meters?

Rainbow Mountain elevation figures vary because sources measure different points (the summit ridge, the main viewpoint or a rounded number) with different tools.

Andina, 2017 (Peru’s state news agency)“more than 5,000 m”more than 16,400 ft

Whichever figure you use, the conclusion is the same: you will be walking above 5,000 m, where the air has roughly half the oxygen available at sea level. The trailhead used on our tours, Phullawasipata, is at about 4,600 m.

Why Altitude Makes the Hike Difficult

The trail itself is not technical. What makes the Rainbow Mountain hike hard is the thin air. At 5,000 m, every step takes more effort, your heart rate rises faster and you need more breaks than you would on a similar trail at home.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) places travelers who reach more than 3,400 m on their first day in the high-risk group for altitude illness. The CDC also notes that fitness does not protect you: fit people get altitude sickness too.

Common symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS), according to the CDC:

  • headache, the main symptom;
  • loss of appetite or nausea;
  • dizziness;
  • unusual tiredness.

Confusion, loss of coordination, a wet cough or breathlessness at rest are warning signs of more serious conditions. In those cases, the person must descend at once. The CDC notes that AMS usually improves with a descent of at least 300 m (1,000 ft).

Rainbow Mountain Hiking Difficulty

On our tours, we rate the Rainbow Mountain hike as moderate to challenging. The grade depends almost entirely on how well you have acclimatized.

FactorWhat to expect
Elevation gainAbout 500 m, from 4,600 m to 5,100 m
Trail surfaceDirt path, wide most of the way; steep final section
Technical skillNone needed
Main challengeAltitude and cold wind
AlternativesHorses can be rented on the trail (extra cost, paid locally)

Can beginners hike Rainbow Mountain? Yes, if they are in basic good health and have spent at least two nights at altitude first. No trekking experience is required. Walk slowly, rest often and use a horse for part of the climb if you need it.

If the walk is a concern, two lower-effort options from Cusco are the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour, which covers part of the route by quad bike, and the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain tour, an easier alternative with a shorter walk.

How Long Does the Hike Take?

On our Rainbow Mountain full-day trek, the timeline is:

StageTime
Pickup in CuscoAbout 4:30 a.m.
Drive to Cusipata and breakfastAbout 2 hours
Drive to the trailheadAbout 1 hour more
Ascent to the viewpoint1.5 to 2 hours
Time at the top20 to 30 minutes
Descent1 to 1.5 hours
Return to CuscoAbout 5:00 p.m.

In total, you walk for about 3 to 4 hours. The full day, from pickup to drop-off, lasts about 12 hours.

How to Acclimatize Before Rainbow Mountain

Do you need to acclimatize for Rainbow Mountain? Yes. We recommend at least two full nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike, and three if you can. The CDC explains that the acute acclimatization phase takes about 3 to 5 days.

Practical steps:

  1. Schedule it later in your trip. Do Rainbow Mountain after Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, not on your first full day.
  2. Take it easy on day one. The CDC advises avoiding alcohol and keeping exercise mild for the first 48 hours at altitude.
  3. Drink water and eat light. Bring 1 to 2 liters for the hike.
  4. Ask your doctor about medication. Some travelers take acetazolamide; it is a prescription drug.
  5. Walk at a pace that lets you talk. If you cannot speak a full sentence, slow down.

Who Should Be More Cautious?

Some travelers should check with a doctor before hiking to 5,000 m. The CDC lists people with:

  • heart disease;
  • chronic lung disease;
  • sleep apnea;
  • sickle cell trait.

The CDC also notes that children are as susceptible to altitude illness as adults. Pregnant travelers should get medical advice first. If anyone in your group felt unwell at altitude on a previous trip, take that as a signal: past response is the best guide, according to the CDC.

What Our Cusco Operations Team Recommends

Our guides lead this hike regularly. Their advice:

  • Turn around if symptoms get worse. Reaching the viewpoint is not worth a medical emergency. Our guides carry a first-aid kit and oxygen.
  • Start slow. A common mistake is walking too fast in the first 20 minutes.
  • Dress in layers. It can be near freezing at dawn and sunny at midday.
  • Combine it wisely. If you have a long trip, do another high hike first, such as Humantay Lake, and keep Rainbow Mountain for later in your stay.

Is Rainbow Mountain harder than Machu Picchu? Yes. Machu Picchu is at 2,430 m, and most of the visit is on stone paths and steps. Rainbow Mountain reaches about 5,100 m, so the same effort feels much harder. Our trekking vs hiking guide helps you choose the right level of activity.
