A Peru honeymoon combines a world-famous Inca citadel, quiet stays in the Sacred Valley and the food and nightlife of Cusco in one trip. Distances are short once you reach Cusco, so you can spend more time together and less time in transit. This guide covers where to go, how many days you need and how to make the trip private and relaxed.

Quick answer: for a honeymoon in Peru, plan 7 to 10 days. Fly into Cusco, stay 2 to 3 nights in the Sacred Valley, sleep in Aguas Calientes before Machu Picchu and finish in Cusco. The best months are May to September, during the dry season.

Why Choose Peru for a Honeymoon?

Peru works well for honeymooners for four reasons:

  • Variety in a small area. Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are close to each other, so a week is enough for a full trip.
  • Experiences you share. Watching the morning light at Machu Picchu or riding a panoramic train through the Urubamba canyon is something you remember together.
  • Room to slow down. The Sacred Valley is quieter and lower than Cusco, with countryside hotels and space to rest after a long flight.
  • Easy to personalize. Private guides, private transport and flexible start times are common in the Cusco region.

Is Peru good for a honeymoon? Yes, especially for couples who enjoy culture, landscapes and some light activity. It is less suited to couples who want a beach-only trip.

Machu Picchu for Honeymooners

Is Machu Picchu romantic? For many couples, it is the high point of the trip. The key is timing: sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before, so you can choose your entry time instead of starting before dawn in Cusco.

Three ways to make Machu Picchu feel more personal:

  1. Book a private guide. A guide is required inside the site, according to PromPerú. A private one adapts the pace to you and gives you time for photos.
  2. Add a hike. Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain gives you a view from above. These tickets sell out first, so book them early on the official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe.
  3. Upgrade the train. PeruRail’s luxury Hiram Bingham train runs daily except the last Sunday of each month, according to the PeruRail 2026 timetable. Panoramic Vistadome cars are a lower-cost upgrade.

Why Stay in the Sacred Valley

Is the Sacred Valley good for honeymooners? Yes. It is the area we recommend most for couples, for three reasons:

  • Lower altitude. Pisac is at about 2,950 m, while Cusco is at 3,399 m. Many travelers sleep better on their first nights in the valley.
  • Quieter stays. Countryside hotels with gardens and mountain views, away from city traffic.
  • On the way to Machu Picchu. The train leaves from Ollantaytambo, in the valley, so you save the drive from Cusco.

Our team is based in Chinchero, in the Sacred Valley, so this is the part of Peru we know best. To compare the two ways to see it, read Classic vs VIP Sacred Valley tour.

Hotels: What Couples Should Look For

Where should couples stay near Machu Picchu? In Aguas Calientes, for one night before the visit. Look for a hotel close to the bus stop, so the early morning is easy. In the Sacred Valley and Cusco, look for:

  • rooms with heating, since nights are cold from May to September;
  • a quiet location away from main roads or the busiest streets;
  • private terraces or gardens in the valley;
  • a restaurant on site, for evenings when you prefer to stay in.

Best Time for a Peru Honeymoon

The best time for a Peru honeymoon is May to September, during the dry season in the Andes. PromPerú describes the dry season at Machu Picchu as sunny, with around 20 °C (68 °F) by day and 10 °C (50 °F) at night. May and September are calmer than June to August. From November to March, expect rain most days but greener landscapes and fewer visitors. Our guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu has a month-by-month breakdown.

What Our Local Team Recommends

The Sisa Peru Tours team plans honeymoons around four rules:

  • Do not plan your first day. After a long flight and the arrival at altitude, rest is the best plan.
  • Put Machu Picchu in the middle of the trip. You will be rested and acclimatized, with a buffer if the weather changes.
  • Leave one free day. Couples often tell us it was the day they enjoyed most.
  • Tell us it is your honeymoon. We can coordinate small details with hotels when you let us know in advance.

FAQs

Is Peru good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Peru is a good honeymoon destination for couples who enjoy culture, mountains and some light activity. Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are close to each other, so a week is enough for a complete trip. Couples who want only beaches may prefer another destination.

How many days do you need for a Peru honeymoon?

Plan 7 days for Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu at a relaxed pace. With 10 days, you can add Lima for its food scene, a second day at Machu Picchu or a longer stay in the Sacred Valley. Fewer than 5 days feels rushed.

Is Machu Picchu romantic?

Yes, for many couples it is the highlight of the trip. To make it more personal, sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before, choose a morning entry and book a private guide. Adding the Huayna Picchu hike gives you a quieter view from above.

Where should couples stay near Machu Picchu?

Stay one night in Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu, in a hotel close to the bus stop. Spend the rest of your nights in the Sacred Valley, which is quieter and lower than Cusco, and finish with two or three nights in Cusco.

Is the Sacred Valley good for honeymooners?

Yes. The Sacred Valley is lower than Cusco, quieter, and on the way to Machu Picchu. It has countryside hotels with gardens and mountain views. Pisac sits at about 2,950 m, compared with 3,399 m in Cusco, so many couples sleep better there on their first nights.

What is the best month for a Peru honeymoon?

May and September are the best months for a Peru honeymoon. Both fall in the dry season, with mostly clear days, and they are less busy than June to August. If you travel from November to March, expect rain and keep a flexible schedule.

How much does a Peru honeymoon cost?

The cost depends on the hotels, the train class and whether you choose private services. As a reference, our 4-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour starts at US$540 per person, without flights (October 2026). Luxury trains and private guides raise the total.
